Shimmering Girl, 2024

120 x 120 cm, Acrylic on canvas
In “Shimmering Girl,” the cow appears as an iconic animal of Alpine culture, seen in half profile and embedded in a kaleidoscopic world of color. The painting style combines gestural brushwork with ornamental surfaces reminiscent of paisley and mandala patterns. This creates a multi-layered pictorial space in which rural motifs overlap with globalized decorative codes. The bell around its neck locates the figure geographically and culturally, yet the visual language at the same time suspends this location: the cow becomes a transcultural figure, a bearer of layers of meaning that shift between folklore, pop aesthetics and spiritual charge. The work thus connects with currents in contemporary art devoted to reclaiming ornament and local color – for instance in the work of Beatriz Milhazes, or in the patterned quality of Gustav Klimt’s late work. Bockemühl’s cow is staged here not naturalistically but as a bearer of cultural attributions – present, alert, and at the same time glowing almost sacredly in a frenzy of color.
