120 x 120 cm, Acrylic on canvas, collageIn “Urban Faces – Mila, Berlin,” Sabina Bockemühl combines figurative portrait painting with urban photorealism. The left half of the picture is expressively overpainted, rich in color and full of energy – a painterly portrait of a young woman with a smoky gesture, bright red hair and a confident gaze. Her individuality is emphasized by tattoos, jewelry and a headscarf, yet at the same time she seems to dissolve into floral and abstract zones of color – as if she herself were part of an urban collage. In contrast stands the right half of the picture: a rain-soaked street, photographically exact, with reflective asphalt, waiting passers-by and a cool quality of light. Here the technique changes abruptly – painting meets documentary precision, subjectivity meets everyday observation. The work plays with the tension between inside and outside, between fleeting city life and individual presence. In the tradition of New Figuration and post-urban portraiture, Bockemühl points to social reality and personal attitude – Berlin appears as a stage, her protagonist as a quiet heroine between self-staging and urban anonymity.
