Lady in Blue

Lady in Blue, 2024

120 x 140 cm, Acrylic on canvas
In “Lady in Blue,” Sabina Bockemühl takes up the classic subject of the reclining woman – a motif that has traveled through art history since the Renaissance, from Giorgione to Manet to Marlene Dumas. But while earlier depictions of the female body were often objects of the gaze, this “Lady” deliberately eludes such access. The figure lies on a red sofa, facing forward but not on display, pensively turned away, with a direct, calm gaze. Her dress is covered in floral patterns, almost camouflaging – as if she wanted to merge with the background. The colors are rich and fluid, partly dripping, with glazed layers and expressive brushwork. The composition plays with the interchange of surface and body, of visibility and dissolution. The background appears fragmented, as if a wallpaper pattern or an interior scene were breaking out into abstraction. The work negotiates intimacy without voyeurism, femininity without pathos. Here Bockemühl interweaves the tradition of figurative painting with elements of abstraction and collage – a portrait that neither illuminates psychologically nor smooths aesthetically, but in its restlessness and texture appears almost modern and melancholic.
