New York im Nebel

New York im Nebel, 2025

200 x 90 cm, Mixed media
In “New York im Nebel” (New York in the Fog, 2025), Thomas Düwer composes a cityscape in transition, animated not by movement but by structure, light and atmosphere. The foreground façades rise with near-digital precision: every window aligned, every grid exact, edges sharply defined. Toward the depth this order dissolves as lines blur, colors desaturate and several towers drift into a misted sky until they seem to dematerialize. The fog is more than a meteorological motif; it is a painterly device that scatters light and disrupts accuracy, turning urban clarity into atmospheric vagueness. What recalls CAD aesthetics at the front transforms in the distance into the softness of classical painting. Central perspective draws the gaze forward, where the grids compress into a modern, almost technical visual language. At the lower left the harbor’s water mirrors a quiet band of golden sky, a calm counterpoint to the structural density above. The gently moving surface offers a moment of visual repose within the rigorously composed verticals. Despite the precision of the architecture the composition remains restrained: nothing clamors for attention, nothing feels contrived. Düwer achieves a balance of control and dissolution, a New York that refuses to be fixed and disperses into light, grids and perspective. Technically the work stands at a threshold. Earlier cityscapes were softly modeled and atmospheric; here the vision is sharper, stylized and condensed, as if the painter’s gaze has adjusted to a digital way of seeing and with it the very notion of urbanity.
