90 x 60 cm, Mixed mediaIn “F.D.N.Y. Fire Engine” (2022), Thomas Düwer stages an FDNY fire engine – precise, present, full of urban symbolism. At the center is the gleaming red ladder truck bearing the words “Home Sweet Home,” set against the urban backdrop of Midtown Manhattan. On the left, the façade of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, completed in 1878 in the Gothic Revival style, rises with misty grandeur – a contrast of stone and spirituality to the sleek functionality of the emergency vehicle. Yet it is the body language of the firefighters that carries the image: an arm hangs casually out of the window; inside one sees helmets, a relaxed posture, focus without pathos. What drives here is not the alarm but certainty – carried by the self-image of “New York’s Bravest.” Düwer refrains from dramatic effects. He shows poise, routine, calm vigilance. An iconic image from a city where the extraordinary is part of everyday life.
