22 x 44 cm, Mixed mediaIn “Luxury Lover,” Devin Miles combines the pop icon, the aesthetics of capital and visual deception into a provocative quotation of consumer culture. The central portrait shows Madonna in an iconic photograph by Patrick Demarchelier from 1990 (gelatin silver print, 40.6 × 50.8 cm). Her stylized appearance, with blonde hair, striking gaze and signal-red lips, becomes a monument to female self-staging. The image support is a modified US dollar bill whose design Miles subtly alters: the serial number “C00000015B” is deliberately constructed, the typographic elements are reworked and gold areas are emphasized. The lettering “Material Girl” refers to Madonna’s 1984 song of the same name, which ironically explores female desire and material values. Miles takes up this tension by not only glorifying the pop figure but also showing her as the product of a world driven by money, desire and media. The dollar bill becomes a projection surface – not as a means of payment, but as a cultural object. The real appeal of the work lies in this blend of glamour and money: it celebrates the icon without concealing its price.
