Empire City

Empire City, 2020

99 x 99 cm, Mixed media
In this collage-like work, Devin Miles evokes the visual memory of New York City: the iconic Statue of Liberty, yellow taxis, a water tower, Wall Street and the Empire State Building condense into an urban palimpsest. The US flags appear altered – their stars turned into red triangles, the stripes shifted horizontally – calling patriotic pathos into question. Miles uses techniques of Pop Art, street art and screen printing to place monuments of American identity in a new tension: between glamour and critique, icon and overlay.
